Mood Boards

Published in the Spring 2018 issue of TABLE Magazine, this piece covers the designs for restaurants that are up-and-coming or revamping their style, including Tryp Hotel, Napa Prime Chophouse, Eliza, and Pusadee's Garden. For this story, I formulated the questions for and conducted several interviews with the restaurant owners, designers, and architects connected to the design projects. Then, I composed the piece based on a combination of their responses and research I conducted on the subject.

Published in the Spring 2018 issue of TABLE Magazine, this piece falls in the Kids Table section, where readers can expect to see fun ideas for snacks to share with their little ones. For this story, I formulated the questions for and conducted an interview with Chef Andrea Ahedo. Then, I composed the piece based on a combination of her responses and research I conducted on the subject.

Pittsburgh Pirates and Rivendale Farms Announce Multi-Tiered Partnership for 2018 Major League Baseball Season

Published on tablemagazine.com in March of 2018, this piece announces the partnership between The Pittsburgh Pirates and Rivendale Farms, a Pittsburgh-based company. I adapted a press release to a more editorial voice emphasizing the values of TABLE Magazine - fresh locally-grown ingredients and the support of local businesses.

Food Tour: The Pursuit with Pastries

Published in the December 2017 issue of WHIRL Magazine, this piece falls in the Food Tour section, where readers can expect to see stories about new and unique places to grab a bite to eat. For this story, I formulated the questions for and conducted an interview with former Steeler Wes Lyons and his business partner, Amber Greene, about their new Bakery, Cakery Square. Then, I composed the piece based on a combination of their responses and research I conducted on the subject.

Feature: WHIRL Magazine Presents Chef’s Best Dish 2017

Published in the November 2017 issue of WHIRL Magazine, this piece introduces the restaurants participating in WHIRL Publishing’s annual event, Chef’s Best Dish, and the dishes they chose to feature. Each member of the editorial team conducted brief interviews with a number of chefs and compiled information about the restaurant, the chef, and the dish into a concise caption. I interviewed and compiled information for Altius, Girasole, Emerald Valley Artisans, A519 Chocolate, and D’s Six Pax & Dogz.

Feature: WHIRL Magazine’s 2017 Nonprofit Giving Guide

Published in the November 2017 issue of WHIRL Magazine, the Nonprofit Giving Guide outlines the efforts of nonprofit organizations in the Pittsburgh area and suggests opportunities for readers to contribute to a good cause. I collaborated with Matthew Hacke, the associate editor at WHIRL Publishing, to collect information on local nonprofits and organize it into an easy-to-read format. I wrote the entries for Animal Friends, Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central PA, Humane Animal Rescue, Laughlin Children’s Center, The Salvation Army, and Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

Real Weddings

Published in various issues of WHIRL Magazine, Real Weddings cover the love stories of couples in the Pittsburgh area who have submitted their special days for consideration. After conducting interviews via email or phone with the couples, I used their responses, as well as the photos they submitted, to write features on their wedding days. More Real Wedding samples are available upon request.

Event Recaps

Published in various issues of WHIRL Magazine, Event Recaps give a brief overview of a charitable event that occurred in the Pittsburgh area within a few months of the magazines publication. I used information from photos taken at the events, the homepages of the organizations hosting the events, and email correspondence to produce accurate and interesting representations of the occasions. In the case of "WHIRL Magazine Presents Chef's Best Dish," I also incorporated information I gathered while attending the event. Artist Spotlight: Burton Morris, Maria DeSimone Prascak, Carolyn Pierotti

Published in the November 2017 issue of WHIRL Magazine, this piece displays three biographies submitted to WHIRL Publishing by artists with connections to the Pittsburgh area. As an editor, my task included eliminating unnecessary information from the biographies to reduce them to approximately 200 words, and editing them to follow AP Style guidelines as well as proper grammar, usage, and punctuation.

Published in the December 2017 issue of WHIRL Magazine, this piece displays three biographies submitted to WHIRL Publishing by artists with connections to the Pittsburgh area. As an editor, my task included eliminating unnecessary information from the biographies to reduce them to approximately 200 words, and editing them to follow AP Style guidelines as well as proper grammar, usage, and punctuation. I worked with Editor in Chief Rachel Jones to complete this assignment.

Addiction Treatment Blog

Developed for my Senior Seminar in Nonfiction Writing, this blog explores topics related to opioid addiction and treatment, including posts on the science behind addiction, methods of treatment, and an exploration of the topic of harm reduction.

A Possible Cure for Crohn's

Published by The Odyssey Online in 2016, this piece explains, in simplified terms, the science behind a vaccine produced as a possible cure for Crohn’s Disease. I drew on scientific research and my personal experience with Crohn’s Disease to create an informative and insightful article.
